In The Bettors Corner: Houston Texans

David Culley spent 43 years as an assistant coach and was never a head coach at any level of football. So when the Houston Texans called, he didn't hesitate. Maybe he should have just let the call go to voicemail. Cully becomes the oldest first-time head coach in NFL history at age 65.

Culley takes over the wreckage and remains of Bill O'Brien's tenure as head coach and general manager. Gone are DeAndre Hopkins, JJ Watt, Will Fuller, Jadeveon Clowney, and most likely Deshaun Watson.

With newly hired Nick Caserio as general manager, the rebuild is underway. Caserio will bring a level of respectability coming from the Patriots, where he spent 20 years in player personnel. With Deshaun Watson almost certainly to be put on paid leave due to the 22 civil lawsuits of sexual misconduct against him, the

Texans went out and signed Tyrod Taylor. In his 12th year in the league, Taylor has thrown for 9,770 yards and ran for 1,850 yards in his career. He has 54 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. They also drafted Stanford quarterback Davis Mills in the third round of the 2021 draft. Watson's days as Houston quarterback seem to be numbered. The signings of Phillip Lindsay and Mark Ingram III in the backfield hope to bolster a rushing attack that ranked 31st in the NFL in 2020.

First-year defensive coordinator and former Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith has the job of rebuilding a defense that ranked 30th overall. They ranked last in rushing yards allowed per game (160.3). And last in interceptions (3). Zach Cunningham, who led the NFL in tackles with 163 returns to be the centerpiece of Lovie Smith's 4-3 defense. Replacing JJ Watt will be difficult to do. Three-time NFL defensive players of the year do not grow on trees.

The Texans play six teams that made the playoffs in 2020. Indianapolis and Tennessee twice in their division. The only primetime game for Houston is at home against Carolina on Thursday night football on September 23rd. There first three road games are all against playoff teams. ( Cleveland, Buffalo, and Indianapolis). Five of their last seven games are at home, including the Jets, Seahawks, and Chargers. They make two trips to the West coast to Arizona and San Francisco. The Texans are a poorly run organization and a bad football team. Deshaun Watson threw for almost 5,000 yards and 33 touchdowns in 2020, and the Texans still lost 12 games. And that team had considerably more talent than this team. I believe Nick Caserio will turn this team around, but it is going to be a long rebuild. There will be some lean years ahead for Houston. Even playing Jacksonville twice and the Jets and Panthers at home, it is hard to see five wins for the Texans. They very well may be picking first next April in the 2022 draft. The good news is they own their first-round selection for the first time since 2019.
